Does the transformer need to be connected or can the wire be direct? Can I buy this usb without the transformer?
Wiring a USB port directly to a 120V power source is extremely dangerous and not recommended. USB ports typically operate at 5V DC (Direct Current), which is much lower than the standard household voltage of 120V AC (Alternating Current). So yes it requires a transformer, you may purchase just the port by itself if you want to supply your own transformer.
